Release Date: February 25 2021

UF Horticultural Sciences Doctor of Philosophy candidate Samantha Burrell won the People’s Choice award at the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition at the 2021 Conference of Southern Graduate Schools on Wednesday, February 24.

“I am really delighted to have won the People's Choice award for my heat at the Regional level 3 Minute Thesis Competition,” Burrell said. “It's especially fulfilling to know I can communicate my research and share my passion with a non-technical crowd, and that they truly enjoyed learning and listening along.”

Developed by the University of Queensland in Australia, the 3MT competition challenges graduate students to make a compelling presentation on the relevance of their research theses and dissertations to a non-academic audience in just three minutes, honing their academic and communication skills.

Burrell’s presentation covered her doctoral dissertation, “Unravelling Disease Resistance, Flavor, and Health-Promoting Compounds in UF’s Basil Breeding Program.”
